The Soviet Union started one of the most infamous battles of World War 2. On the 16th of April, 1945 they attacked the outskirts of Berlin via the Oder River. The Soviet Union defeated the German forces quickly and easily with little casualties, making their advance to Berlin easier. The Soviet Union had begun bombing the city of Berlin by April 20th, they had completely surrounded the city within several days. This was when the leader of the Germany Adolf Hitler realized that he was going to lose the battle. In a desperate attempt to save Berlin he ordered that troops from Western Germany were moved to Berlin in order to save the city. A fierce fight occurred the moment the Soviet Union set foot upon Berlin, the fighting was fierce. The city had been reduced to ruins and the streets were full of rubble, this meant that tanks were barely used.

Germany was running low on ammunition and by April 30th the Soviet Union were approaching the heart of Berlin. Hitler and his wife Eva Braun, realized defeat and committed suicide. The night of May 1st, a majority of the remaining German soldiers attempted to break out of the city in a desperate last ditch attempt and escape to the Western Front, few soldiers survived and on May 2nd, the German generals in Berlin surrendered to the Soviet army. It was only five days on May 7th 1945 when the remaining leaders of Nazi Germany signed an unconditional surrender to the Allies signifying the end of World War Two in Europe.
adolf hitlerAdolf Hitler and his wife Eva Braun committed suicide on the 30th of April 1945. There is no certainty behind Hitler's suicide, whether it was from gunshot, cyanide or a combination of both. His wife Eva used cyanide to kill herself. Hitler left instructions of what was to be done with his remains. He ordered that his wife and his remains were to be doused in petrol and set on fire in the Reich Chancellery garden. The remains were recovered soon after and in 1970 they were cremated and the ashes were scattered.
